Match Summary

This clash saw both teams fielding weakened sides with most of their stronger players absent. Barnsley were missing two of their top four players whilst Rotherham Juniors played without most of their A team players - leading to them being heavily outgraded on the middle and bottom boards.

Boards six, seven and eight were first to finish with Barnsley gaining three points. Ken won on board six after a slight oversight from white in a tactical position lost a piece with no compensation. Leigh and Vlad gained victories over much weaker graded players.

Martin increased Barnsley's lead when board two saw white resign after a blunder in a roughly equal position would have led to black winning whites' queen for a rook.

Rotherham Juniors then staged a fightback winning the next two games to set up a close finish. On board three Pete took too much time playing the opening badly. He somehow got a winning position which disappeared in one instinctive blunder trying to prevent time trouble that allowed black to win. Tony on board four never got out of the starting blocks and got suffercated before losing.

The match was decided in Barnsley's favour after two final draws.

Board six saw Dave pushing to get the advantage but his opponent defended stoutly and a draw was agreed. Exchanges led to a bishop versus knight ending with black having the better king but he thought not enough time to make use of this advantage.

Andy's game on top board was a Caro-Kann which led to castling on opposite sides with both players attacking their opponent's king. First white then black missed wins and in the end a draw resulted.

A rare Friday night win for Barnsley who are often defeated by their opponents especially when playing away.
