Match Summary

Lacking two of our top players and two more middle order players it was with some fear and trepidation that we arrived to face last seasons' runners up University A.

Although University were without Jonathan Arnott, one of their better players we still faced a tough struggle. We were heavily outgraded on most boards.

Despite these facts Barnsley played well. On board one Andy slayed Prasuns' Sicilian Dragon (see the game below). Peter playing on the dizzy heights of board four continued his impressive comeback to league chess winning Tristram Cole. Neil won with the black pieces on board six.

The match score was level going into the final game. University won three games on the remaining odd boards and a draw was agreed on board two in a level position with neither player wanting to compromise their position.

The last game was a tense affair with chances for both sides. White in time trouble was material up but faced an attack which he was able to fend off exchanging queens winning the game and the match for University.

Although a valiant effort with a little more luck Barnsley may have picked up an unexpected point in this match.

This was not to be and we still need more points from the next four matches to make sure that division one chess is still a reality next season.
