The club where your moves matter
Eleven players participated in the 20 minute handicap held on a muggy 23rd June 2009.
Time constraints meant this resulted in a six round competition.
Tony Farrell replaced Richard Hall after the first round so Richard could concentrate on running the event.
The early rounds saw most players were in contention to win the tournament.
Wins in the last three rounds by Tony Pogson and Gary Hinchcliffe
lifted them above the rest of the field.
Tony claimed first place with 5½/6 and Gary claimed second place with 4½/6.
Despite fading in the second half of the tourney The Richard Hall / Tony Farrell combination came third.
Gerry and Francesca gained creditable 50 percent scores.
Perhaps some of the play can best be described by Tony Farrell who remarked "Nobody deserved to win" in the opening game Pogson-Sheard. True to blitz play white blundered a rook only for black to return the rook plus a couple of pawns to finally reach a drawn opposite coloured bishop ending!

Each game lasted 20 minutes.
Players were divided into groups according to their grades (see groups below)
and then a time handicap (see time handicaps below)
was applied based on the relative group difference between the players.
Groups:
Group 1 - Tony Pogson, Martin Sheard, Garry Hinchcliffe.
Group 2 - Paul Lea-Kime, Richard Hall, Tony Farrell, Francesca Fozard, John Stevens.
Group 3 - Robbie Merc, Gerry Thickett.
Group 4 - John Fozard.
Time Handicaps:
Players in the same group: 10 minutes - 10 minutes.
Difference of one group: 8 minutes - 12 minutes.
Difference of two groups: 5 minutes - 15 minutes.
Difference of three groups: 2 minutes - 18 minutes.
Examples:
- in the game Pogson v Sheard both players had 10 minutes since they were in the same group
- in the game Hinchcliffe v Lea-Kime , a difference of 1 group, white had 8 minutes and black 12 minutes.
